Preview: A history of God’s chosen. This is the sixth lesson in a thirteen-part series of lessons on this subject.

Scripture Reading: Exodus 34:1-10.

Memory Verse: Exodus 32:19.

1. Discuss how God granted Israel a second chance to be faithful to Him in the foregoing Scripture Reading and Memory Verse.
2. Did God again declare to Moses that He would not share His godship with any other god? Exodus 34:11-17, Isaiah 42:8 & Isaiah 48:11.
3. What was Moses’ message to the people when he returned with the second set of Commandment stones? Exodus 34:28-31 & Exodus 35:1-2.
4. How did God manifest His presence to Israel? Exodus 40:33-38.
Note: After Israel worshipped the golden calf God was about to withdraw His blessings and protection from them. Moses interceded on their behalf and God gave them another chance. He gave them clear instructions on how to build the Tabernacle where He could fellowship with them. Finally, they obeyed and again He manifested His presence through the cloud by day and fire by night.
5. Did God instruct Moses to send spies into the Promised Land? Numbers 13:1-3 & Numbers 13:17-21.
6. What report did they bring back? Numbers 13:26-27 & Numbers 13:32-33.
7. How did this differ from Caleb and Joshua’s report? Numbers 13:3 & Numbers 14:6-9.
Note: Moses and God’s assembly had been in the wilderness for their second year (Numbers 1:1), God had been giving Moses instructions concerning every phase of life (His Constitution). These laws covered every aspect of man’s needs, from how to worship Yahweh to how to treat their fellowman, even health and dietary laws. Nothing was omitted. Study the Books of Deuteronomy, Leviticus, and Numbers. God was now ready to bring them into the land which He had promised to their fathers, Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob. In Egypt they had had little opportunity to worship God or know how they were to serve Him, but now they had been instructed. They were God’s chosen body of believers: The Church of the wilderness.
8. Were they willing to practice what they had heard? Numbers 14:1-5 & Numbers 14:10.
9. Was God again ready to destroy this unbelieving, unthankful assembly and raise up a new nation through Moses? Numbers 14:11-12.
10. How did Moses plead for the people? Numbers 14:13-19.
11. What decision did God make because of Moses’ plea? Numbers 14:20-31.
Note: God honored Moses’ request, but what an awful price these people paid for their sin. They now wanted to obey but it was too late. Numbers 14:39-45. Let us remember this is not just a story written about a nation of people who lived thousands of years ago. This is about the Church of the Living God. No body of people can function without laws, but obedience must come from a willing mind. This requires faith and respect for the Law Giver. Hebrews 10:16-26.
