Preview: A history of God’s chosen. This is the tenth lesson in a thirteen-part series of lessons on this subject.

Scripture Reading: Hebrews 11:9-16.

Memory Verse: Hebrews 11:39.

1. Can we conclude from the foregoing Scriptures that God’s promise to Abraham and his descendants was not confined to the Land of Canaan? Discuss.
2. How does this apply to the Church today? I Peter 1:3-5.
3. What better way do we have to redemption because of Jesus' work? ? Hebrews 11:32-40, Hebrews 12:22-29.
Note: The Body of Christ today (made up of believing Jews and Gentiles), has a more sure word of prophecy than they, because Christ has finished the promised work of redemption. We are still strangers and pilgrims looking for a heavenly city. We should not value our roots in this life over God.
4. How will it profit us in death if we should gain all of the wealth of this world? Hebrews 9:27, Mark 8:36.
5. What eternal future is promised to those who look for that city whose builder and maker is God? John 14:1-4.
6. What must we remember while we await this promise? I Corinthians 3:8-17, II Corinthians 4:16-18, II Corinthians 5:1-2.
Note: God’s people must be willing to suffer persecution, disappointment, and material loss. They must accept without fear that they will die, but if they live and die in Christ, there is a better day coming. Today, we must be a living part of God’s Heavenly Kingdom. Preparation comes through knowing and obeying God’s Word. Read Matthew 4:1-4 & Matthew 4:8-10.
7. How did Paul describe the reward of the righteous? I Corinthians 2:6-10, I Corinthians 2:14.
8. How did Abraham’s promised blessing come to the Gentiles? Galatians 3:11, Galatians 3:13-14, Galatians 3:16, Galatians 3:26-29.
Note: Salvation has always been by faith, God’s laws were and are the yardstick by which we know what He requires of His people. Faith and obedience is tested by God’s Commandments. Abraham was justified by faith. God’s promise to him was Jesus Christ. Galatians 3:16. Therefore there is only one way for all nations to enter the eternal land of promise.
9. What happens when we stop looking for that city? I John 2:15-17, Revelation 22:14-15.
Note: Do not become too attached to this world. Remember, like Abraham, God’s people are just passing through.
Law does not save us; salvation depends on our relationship with Jesus Christ. It is He who gives us the desire and ability to obey God’s laws. He said, “If you love me, keep my commandments.” John 14:15.
10. How did John address this subject? I John 3:1-9, John 3:4-8.
Note: We cannot enter God’s Kingdom without being law abiding.
