Preview: A lesson on the importance of not straying from the path of God regardless of age. This is the first part of a two-part lesson on this subject.
Scripture Reading: II Chronicles 36:11-17.
Memory Verse: Job 12:20.
1. Do we find that God’s judgment is visited on women, children, and the aged as well as the young men when a nation is wicked according to the foregoing Scriptures?
Note: We sometimes think that the very young or very old should not be punished for wrong doings but God’s wrath is poured out on all of the wicked regardless of their age or gender.
2. Does age always mean that one is wise? Why or why not? Job 32:1-9.
3. Were the old men of Sodom less evil than the young? Discuss. Genesis 19:4-5.
4. What makes the difference? Job 33:1-6, Job 33:12, Job 35:13-16 & Job 36:11-12.
Note: Our attitude toward God is the only thing that makes a difference. When one refuses to be admonished by godly wisdom he is foolish regardless of his age.
5. How did Solomon confirm this? Ecclesiastes 4:13.
6. What example do we find in the life of the sons of Eli the Prophet? I Samuel 2:12-17.
7. Was Eli aware of their conduct? How did Eli respond to the news? I Samuel 2:22-24.
8. What was God’s judgment on Eli and his sons? I Samuel 2:30-34.
9. How was this judgment executed? I Samuel 4:15-18.
10. How does Eli’s death contrast with that of King David? I Chronicles 29:26-28.
Note: Both men had lived to a ripe old age. Each had served in their profession for forty years. Eli died in disgrace because he permitted his sons to desecrate the Tabernacle of God, but David died with honor, because he repented of his sin. He loved and obeyed the Lord.
