An Introduction to Jesus - Who Do Men Say That I Am? Part 10 of 13

Preview: This series of lessons is dedicated as an introduction to Jesus. This is the tenth lesson in a thirteen-part series on this subject.


Pre-reading: Matthew 16:5-14, John 20:2.

Scripture Reading: Matthew 16:13-17.

Memory Verse: Matthew 16:20.

1. What do we learn from the forgoing Scriptures about the identity of Jesus?
2. What was Peter's comprehension of what the Spirit revealed to him? Did he fully understand? Matthew 16:21-23.
Note: Although the Holy Spirit revealed to Peter that Jesus was the Christ, the Son of the Living God, he had no depth of understanding as to what it meant. Many confessing believers today have the same shallow conception of Jesus.
3. How did the other disciples understand and respond? Mark 9:31-32, Luke 24:1-9.
4. Did they still have trouble believing after being reminded of what Jesus had told them? What did it take for them to believe? Luke 24:10-12.
5. Did their lack of understanding keep them from recognizing Jesus when they saw Him? Discuss. Luke 24:13-21.
6. Did they know at that time that the tomb was empty? What were they expecting to find? Luke 24:22-24.
Note: Even though they knew what Jesus had said about being in the grave three days and three nights, and they had heard the angel’s message proclaiming that He was alive, they could not believe it. They were in a state of despair. They were looking at the circumstances rather than to God who cannot lie.
7. How did Jesus describe their problem? Luke 24:25-27.
Note: The same is true today; we can only know Jesus when the Holy Spirit reveals Him to us.
8. What was their response to His message? Luke 24:28-32.
9. What did they do with their new-found knowledge? Luke 24:33-35.
10. How did they react when Jesus made His appearance? Luke 24:36-37.
Note: Today, many claim to know Him yet are afraid to hear the truth. Jesus is the Truth.
