Preview: A history of God’s chosen. This is the first part of a thirteen-part series of lessons on this subject.

Scripture Reading: Exodus 3:1-18.

Memory Verse: Exodus 2:24.

1. Discuss the importance of God’s name and His reason for delivering Israel from Egyptian bondage from the foregoing Scriptures.
Note: Egypt had many gods. It was, therefore, imperative that Moses be able to identify the God who would deliver these people from Pharaoh’s bondage. The Hebrew name when translated into English reads “YHWH”. Most Hebrew scholars are convinced the name should be pronounced “Yahweh.” In most English translations the name appears as LORD with all capital letters, or Jehovah. However, the most important thing is that we understand the meaning of His name. God Himself made clear its meaning. The Hebrew word for “I Am” is also translated “I Will Be”. He assured Moses that when he stood before Pharaoh “I AM ALSO THERE”. That name assures us that God (the “I AM”) is always there to act on behalf of all those who know, trust, and obey Him. Let us praise His Holy Name.
2. What message was Moses to deliver to Pharaoh? Exodus 4:21-23.
3. What was Pharaoh’s answer to Yahweh’s request? Exodus 5:1-2.
4. Did Moses’ appeal only make life harder for God’s first born nation? Exodus 5:3-9.
5. What action did God take against Pharaoh? Exodus 6:1, Exodus 7:14-17, Exodus 7:20, & Exodus 8:1-6 & Exodus 8:20-24.
Note: Each time Moses appealed to Pharaoh to release the people it was always for the purpose of worshipping their God. Each time Pharaoh refused to listen another plague fell on the Egyptians, each one worse than the one before. Finally, God passed a death sentence on all of the firstborn of Egypt. This is when He instituted the Passover for His people. Exodus 12:1-27.
6. Why did God continue to harden Pharaoh’s heart? Exodus 7:1-5, Exodus 9:13-16, Exodus 10:1-2 & Exodus 14:3-4.
Note: Just as God had promised, Pharaoh and all Egypt begged the people to leave. Pharaoh even asked Moses to bless him. Exodus 12:32-33.
7. How did Pharaoh react to this death plague? Exodus 12:29-33.
8. Were the Egyptians now eager to give their wealth to Israel? Exodus 11:1-3 & Exodus 12:35-36.
9. How many people did Moses lead out after four hundred and thirty years in Egypt? Exodus 12:37 & Exodus 12:40-41.
Note: Seventy people had gone in but a mighty nation came out. The Church was on the way!
10. Why is God’s name so important? Exodus 6:2-8.
