Scripture Reading: Genesis 35:1-15.

Memory Verse: Genesis 37:1.

1. Discuss, from the above Scriptures, how God called Jacob and his family back to the land that he had promised to his grandfather Abraham.
Note: In Genesis Chapters 32 and 33 we are told how God put it in Esau’s heart to love and forgive Jacob and God “the Almighty” appeared to Jacob to reaffirm His promise of a righteous branch in Genesis 35:11. He changed his name from Jacob to Israel which means “a prince that has power with God and with man and will prevail” (Genesis 32:28). The dye is cast. A righteous nation is on the way.
2. How many sons did Jacob (Israel) have? Genesis 35:21-27.
3. What did his twelve sons represent? Exodus 28:9-11, Exodus 28:21 & Exodus 39:14.
4. Why was Joseph God’s choice for extending His righteous nation? Genesis 37:1-4.
5. What message did He give Joseph in a dream? Genesis 37:5-7 & Genesis 37:9.
6. How did his eleven brothers react to his dream? Genesis 37:8 & Genesis 37:10-11.
7. What action did his brothers take against him? Genesis 37:12-14 & Genesis 37:18-28.
8. What did God promise their great-grandfather Abraham many years before these young men were born? Genesis 15:13-16.
Note: Now we begin to see the details and the beginning of the fulfillment of God’s promise. Today, we need to study God’s Word; that is how He speaks to us. We must know what His promises and requirements are if we are to be branches of righteousness. Then we must trust Him to fulfill His promises. He may not always do so in our frame of references and timing, but His Word will never fail. He is not slack concerning His promises to us. Not willing that any should perish but that all come to repentance. In order to fully appreciate how God blessed and protected Joseph, and how he in turn worshipped and obeyed God, prayerfully read Genesis Chapters 39-42.
9. How did God place Joseph in a position of honor in Egypt? Genesis 41:15-16 & Genesis 41:37-44.
10. How did God move the rest of Jacob’s family to Egypt? Genesis 46:1-6.
11. What did Joseph understand to be the fulfillment of God’s promise to Abraham? Genesis 45:4-9 & Genesis 50:17-20.
Note: So, God’s plan and promises continue. They cannot be stopped because God had sworn by Himself to Abraham, and a righteous branch is still abiding in the vine.
