Preview: The story of Joseph in the book of Genesis is proof to us that God’s will overcomes all internal and external influence. God knows what His plan is for each of us, even though it might not be exactly clear in our eyes at the time. Trust and faith in God will always keep Him in our hearts and will lead us to realize the plan God has made for each of us.

Scripture Reading: Genesis 37:1-36.

Memory Verse: Genesis 39:21.

1. How was Joseph revered by Israel, his father? Genesis 37:3.

2. Why were his brothers envious of Joseph? Genesis 37:4.

3. What did Joseph do to further their hatred of him? Genesis 37:5-11.

4. What did Joseph’s brothers want to do to him? Genesis 37:20.

5. Who saved Joseph from death? What ultimately happened to Joseph? Genesis 37:24-28.

Note: Joseph was favored by his father, Israel, and was spoiled in his brothers’ eyes. Envy and hatred in their hearts consumed them, leading to Joseph losing his privilege and being sold to a foreign land. This is true to life as we can achieve great highs and even greater lows.

6. Was Joseph burdened or blessed when he was sold in Egypt? Why? Genesis 39:1-6.

7. Why was Joseph favored by his master? Genesis 39:3.

8. What happened to Joseph in the house of his master? Did he do what was right in God’s eyes? Genesis 39:7-9, Genesis 39:12-20.

Note: Joseph did not want to sin against God, nor did he want to disrespect his master. Joseph still was punished for doing the right thing, however. We may find ourselves in very similar predicaments but keeping a pure heart and following God will help us through adversity.

9. Why didn’t Joseph find cruelty in prison? Genesis 39:21.

10. What was God’s plan for Joseph while in prison? Genesis 40:5-22.

Note: God’s plan was to have Joseph interpret the dreams of the cup-bearer and the baker. This was done so, through God’s glory, with all aspects of the interpretation coming true. We will continue the lesson in Part 2 and shall see how God’s design plays out.
